Productivity Hacks for WAHM’s

Being productive might seem like a distant dream if you are a mom. I know from experience how hard it can be to maintain a successful business online, while also making sure that the needs of children are met.

There is a difference between being busy and being productive.

When you are truly productive, you can get more work done while also saving time to spend with your family. I have struggled with it for a long time and after much research and trial, I have compiled a list of the best productivity hacks that would work wonders for you.

Know Your Priorities

As an entrepreneur, I have to deal with several tasks daily. I can’t do everything most of the time. Rarely, I get to do all the things that I had in mind. But, still, it is okay because I make sure that the most essential tasks for the day are completed.

You also can make sure that the most crucial tasks for the day are completed on time. You must list your priority tasks and make sure you do them first when you start your day. Having a list created for your top priorities is one of the best productivity hacks ever!

Plan Your Day Ahead

To make your day most productive, planning ahead is very important. You can make the plans for the day when you wake up in the morning or even the day before. Without a solid plan, it is very easy to feel disorganized and eventually give up.

When you have a proper plan of action, you get a roadmap that you need to follow. It won’t be easy for you to get distracted, which would lead to getting more things done.

Set Your Goals Smartly

S.M.A.R.T. stands for:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Time-bound

An example of a SMART goal:

Take a DELE (Spanish as a foreign language) exam in October this year.

This goal is SMART because:

  1. Specificity: I know exactly what to do.
  2. Measure: if I sign up and then appear on the exam, the goal will be achieved.
  3. Capabilities: Learning grammar and vocabulary required for the exam should be achievable for an average person 🙂
  4. Relevance: the goal is important to me – I need to be able to communicate in Spanish for the new project at work and during my trip to Chile.
  5. Time: The exam is in October, I’ve studied Spanish last year, so I will be able to complete a dedicated course and learn the required material.

Voilà! That’s how the SMART goal gets set. Now it’s your turn to set your goals for this year.

Avoid Multitasking

This might sound a little contradictory, but believe it or not, multitasking hampers your productivity. When you are doing multiple tasks together, your attention is being divided which makes you slow.

On the other hand, if you complete one task and then focus on the next one, then you would notice that you are getting things done faster. I know it can be difficult as a mom, but try to focus as much as possible on one task at a time.

One of the best productivity hacks we can suggest is putting the harder & longer tasks for early in the morning when everyone is still sleeping, or at night when everyone is sleeping so you don’t have any interruptions.

Take Short Breaks Between Tasks

Breaks are very important to reboot your energy. Even when you are having a busy day, you should not compromise on your break time. A break is not efficient if you are thinking about work in your break time.

To make the best use of break time you should do activities that boost your productivity. Such as go out for a walk, talk to a friend, take a nap, play a musical instrument, do a chore around the house, etc. The point of taking a break is to come back with a fresh mind so you can look at problems from a fresh perspective.

One of our favorite productivity hacks as a WAHM with the children is to work for one hour, and spend one hour with the kids, work one hour, spend one hour with the kids, all day. After all your children only want your attention for a little bit so that they can be distracted again for a longer period next time.

Do Similar Work In Batches

It is a good idea to do the same type of work one after the other to make your day more productive. It has been found through various research that when you do a similar type of work, both the speed and the quality of your work increases.

It is not possible to do every type of task in batches but apply this technique whenever possible to increase your productivity. An example of this can be doing a batch recording of your videos for a week if you are a YouTuber.

Make Use of Timers

One of my best productivity hacks is using the app called “Focus Keeper”.

You can set your own timer lengths for focus, short breaks, or long breaks. You can set however many sessions you want to do per round. Set daily goals, and your own reset time! There are different ticking sounds, and alarm sounds you can choose from. They also have a habit tracking program on the app! The BEST part is that this app is totally FREE!

There are now different apps available that you can use to keep track of your time. It is important to make sure that you are finishing a task in the time that you allocated while making daily plans.

Get Rid of Distractions

We live in a day and age when it is very easy to get distracted. While social media has many perks, one of its biggest negatives is diverting attention from crucial tasks to scrolling through the news feed. What might have started as a five-minute break to check your message, would turn into hours of browsing without you even noticing until it’s too late.

You can use several apps that block notifications when you are working. It is better if you can turn the silent mode on while you finish your work. It is important to exercise self-control so these distractions don’t take over your productive day.

Take Care of Yourself First

One of the best productivity hacks that actually work is to take care of yourself. If you are not taking care of yourself, you won’t have the means to be productive.

You don’t need to hit the gym or do an intense workout to take care of yourself. The most effective things that you can do for a healthy life are to eat healthy food, sleep on time, walk every day, and keep calm.

Know your golden hours

You must have realized that during certain parts of the day, you are able to do things better than others. During those golden hours, your mind is more alert and your productivity is at its peak. To be more productive you need to identify those hours and start doing your most important tasks of the day during those hours.

Sleep Properly

I know it can be hard to be able to sleep when you are a mom with a baby. The schedules can be messy and it is not easy to establish a sleep routine. That being said, sleep deprivation is a common reason for many diseases and also for loss of productivity. Make sure that you are sleeping when you can to avoid further complications in your future.

Pro Tip: Create a bedtime routine for yourself as you have with your baby. Get your room a noise machine to help block your brain out from all other activities.

Healthline says these are some other ways you can get back on track with a healthy sleep schedule…

  • limiting daytime naps (or avoiding them altogether)
  • refraining from caffeine past noon or at least a few hours prior to bedtime
  • going to bed at the same time each night
  • waking up at the same time every morning
  • sticking to your bedtime schedule during weekends and holidays
  • spending an hour before bed doing relaxing activities, such as reading, meditating, or taking a bath
  • avoiding heavy meals within a few hours before bedtime
  • refraining from using electronic devices right before bed
  • exercising regularly, but not in the evening hours close to bedtime
  • reducing alcohol intake

It is Okay to Fail

Some days even when you try your best, you won’t be able to be productive and you would need to accept that. Your world changes instantly when you become a mom and to be a perfect mom you start to put pressure on yourself.

When a certain day doesn’t go your way, instead of dwelling on that try to focus on the next day to make that productive.

One of the greatest productivity hacks out there is to do better at what you just failed at. Learn from it, and grow. Do it better next time!

Create a workspace at home

One of the productivity hacks for working from home is to create your own workspace. Having a workspace gets you in a different mindset when you are working. If you are too comfortable when you are working, it would be harder to get the job done.

It is ideal if you can have a separate room to create your workspace from home, but if that is not possible getting a work desk in your room should also work. Make sure you have enough natural light and air in your workspace.

One of the top best productivity hacks I can mention is to get your own office created. The whole house is shared with everyone, and the best thing you can do for YOU is to have your own little space created. Read this article on how to create the perfect little home office!

Stick to a Routine

Stay-at-home moms who also work online need flexible hours to be able to take care of the needs of their children. While flexibility is a nice commodity to have, I would suggest sticking to a routine as much as possible.

When you are working for fixed hours every day, it actually increases your workflow. Of course, you should take advantage of flexibility at work, but keeping it at a minimum would help you maintain a work-life balance. This is one of the best productivity hacks you can follow!

One of the most common problems with remote jobs is that you don’t get to socialize. Loneliness can lead to depression, eventually hampering your productivity. If you are working for an organization, you can talk to your coworkers through group messages. In case, you are working solo for a client, talk to your friends and family in your break time. Even just networking online with different like-minded moms can be really helpful! You can learn even more productivity hacks from your new friends online that do the same thing as you!
